An 11-year-old Mississippi boy was shot by a police officer after he called 911 for help. Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest by an Indianola Police Department officer on May 20, 2023. This officer has been identified as Greg Capers, who is Indianola's 'Policeman of the Year.' Greg Capers has been placed on administrative leave as a result of shooting Aderrien. Aderrien's mother Nakala Murry was having a domestic disturbance with one of her other children's father. Nakala had told Aderrien to call the police because she was concerned for her safety.

While Aderrien has since been released from the hospital, he was placed on a ventilator and given a chest tube. Additionally, Aderrien had a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and a lacerated liver all due to the shooting.

Capers had his gun aimed at the house and instructed those inside the home to come outside, when Aderrien had turned to come outside, Aderrien was immediately shot. Nakala states that this occurred within 1-2 minutes after Capers had instructed the family outside. Nakala had to render first aid to Aderrien and placed her hand over his chest to apply pressure on the wound while he was bleeding out. She states that "Aderrien came within an inch of losing his life."

The family is now calling for Capers to be fired and charged with the shooting.

It is despairing to say the least, that police officers in the United States are so quick to draw their firearms, especially towards noncombative and compliant individuals, and at children nonetheless. Your Daily Load hopes that justice is served for Aderrien and his family because what happened was inhumane, and it is miraculous that Aderrien pulled through. Your Daily Load will be following this story to provide updates on Aderrien's recovery, as well as any updates on the ramifications (if any) that Capers will face.
