Michigan Man Charged After Child Finds a Gun and Fatally Shoots Himself

A man from Kentwood, Michigan, was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter, after a child in his home found a gun in the couch and pulled the trigger. This man is 22-year-old Markus Nevills Jr., and the victim is 2-year-old Kiaire McCoy. Kiaire is the son of Nevills's girlfriend. This shooting occurred on Friday.

When the shooting occurred Nevills was high on marijuana and scrolling on his phone. The police said Nevills stated in his own words that he was "zoned out" at the time of the shooting.

In Nevills's initial court appearance he stated, "I don't understand this. I'm trying to see how they are saying this is my fault, I didn't shoot and kill him."

There are so many issues within this specific case. All gun owners have a responsibility to themselves and others to ensure firearms are being handled in their proper ways. This weapon was not stored in a secure place and was loaded, which are two big NOs in owning and operating a firearm. If there are kids in the house, there should be absolutely no reason why a gun is out and easily accessible. Which displays how dangerous and careless many gun owners are. Nevills cannot even take accountability for his actions, even though it was his firearm. He sees no fault in his actions- rather we should say his inactions- simply because he did not pull the trigger. As if a 2-year-old can comprehend their actions the same as a 22-year-old.

Unfortunately, shootings like these happen frequently across the country. Children will gain access to a firearm located in their house, most likely due to parental negligence. Often this results in either themselves or others in the house becoming injured- sometimes fatally.

It is no secret that the United States has a gun violence issue, and it is only becoming exacerbated in recent years. This is a complex issue because it is not only because of the lack of mental health and gun control in the nation, but also the fact that the National Rifle Association (NRA) utilizes millions of dollars to bribe the government to do what they want. Obviously, the NRA does not want gun control to pass because that would mean they are losing money on sales. It does not matter to the NRA if the people buying and operating firearms are out to inflict harm upon the public, if they are a paying consumer that is all they care about.

Simply put, the U.S. government needs to prioritize the general welfare instead of being a corporatist cuck.
