The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Friday May 19, 2023, that there have been 81 bacterial infections because of contaminated eyedrops. These bacterial infections are extremely resistant to antibiotics.

14 people have been blinded from using these contaminated eyedrops, while four others needed to have their eyeballs surgically removed. Additionally, four individuals have died as a result of using these contaminated eyedrops. This type of infection is typically limited to only the eyes; however, if the bacteria enters the bloodstream, it can become fatal.

There are 10 different eyedrop that are causing these bacterial infections, but the most common amongst these is EzriCare Artifical Tears. These eyedrops are primarily sold online and have since been recalled. The type of bacteria causing these severe reactions is a strain of pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. This strain had never been reported in the United States before this year.

Cases have spanned across 18 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The CDC is expecting more cases to pop up. If there are more cases, Your Daily Load will provide those details. Subscribe today to stay informed!
