McDonald's Franchises Hire More Than 300 Children

Source: Wikimedia Commons

It is becoming all too common for corporations in the United States to utilize child labor. With certain states rolling back on child labor regulations, this will become commonplace in the U.S. In Kentucky, over 300 children were found to be working across three different McDonald's franchises. Between these three owners, they collectively own more than 60 locations spanning across the following states: Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, and Ohio. Indiana recently rolled back their child labor regulations, so it is not surprising that they were caught violating child labor laws. These 300 children worked overnight shifts without pay. The U.S. has federal legislation that prohibits such labor, and yet the following states are still employing children. Sure, these franchise owners must pay fines for violating such laws, it will not be enough to prevent other franchise owners from doing this. There has to be real consequences for real change to be enacted. Migrant children are the most vulnerable to be exploited by child labor violators in the U.S. Having migrant children work is often the 'price' these children must pay in order to gain entry into the U.S. There needs to be more protections when it comes to migrant children.
